Quickly running into a clearing by a small brook Kira panted as her legs wouldn't move any more. There were dried up tear marks on her face and her hair that was normally her pride was messed and loose from any ties.
Placing her hands on her thighs to try and lean to catch her breath Kira gasped for air. Her eyes were shut tight, blocking out the beauty of her surroundings. Unlike most days the soft chirping and quiet flow of the water didn't affect her.
Opening her eyes, Kira moved to one of the trees only a few feet from the brook and still panting sat down. Wrapping her arms around her legs she pulled them to her chest and looked at the brook, her breathing slowly going back to normal although her eyes never took in the water she was looking at.
It's been so long now... I wonder if she even remembers me anymore...

Oki was standing in the brook, almost up to her knees in water. The current lapped at her skin and writhed and formed itself as she gracefully and quickly formed her handseals. It began to coil up and around her body slowly, taking on the serpentine form of a dragon until the child ran into the clearing, breathing hard. Oki had expected to be alone out here, so the surprise broke her conversation and the water fell back into the brook with a quiet splash.
She looked the girl over, but couldn't quite place her. She seemed unhurt, but the disarrayed hair and the tear stains were concerning. Was she being chased? Oki began to make her way up out of the water, stepping up onto the bank still watching the child.
"Are you alright, imootochan?"

As her breathing evened out, Kira found herself close to tears again. It would be two years now since she last saw her mother. Not noticing anything around her, Kira choked back a sob from forming, she hated being like this.
Why do I always cry? I'm suppose to go to school soon... I can't cry anymore... Daddy never does...
Startled out of her thoughts by someone speaking, Kira yelped and pushed herself back more against the tree. Scrubbing her eyes with the back of her arm she looked up. Seeing one of the pretty girls that were always around town when she went with Daddy Kira blushed a bright red before stuttering.
G-Gomen...

Oki smiled and came closer to the child, squatting down so she could be more on her level.
"It's alright, little one, I was just surprised to see you out here by yourself." She noticed the girl was still upset, on the verge of fresh tears. "Are you alright? Are you lost or do you need help? My name is Oki."

Looking down at her knees that were pulled up against her chest, Kira blinked back the tears that were trying to escape from her again.
Iie, Oki-senpai.... I think I can get home by myself...
Trailing off, Kira shuddered at the thought of going back to the empty house, her father was away on a mission and couldn't get the time off for this day. Not noticing as a tear slipped out, Kira shook her head once again before trying to smile for the pretty lady.
Arigato Oki-senpai.... but I don't think you can help me... I just.... don't want to be home by myself right now...

Oki nodded, understanding something personal was going on and decided not to push the subject any further. Instead, she pulled a tissue out of her pocket and held it out to the little girl.
"I understand. And now you're neither home nor by yourself."

Blinking slightly at the tissue before taking it, Kira wiped at her eyes, thankful that her nose didn't start to run. Holding the tissue in her hands she looked at the wet paper before looking up at the lady.
Oki-senpai... when you become a ninja... and you grow up... are you not alowed to cry anymore?
Her cheeks were still a light pink from earlier but she couldn't help but ask the question. Daddy didn't say i but... he wouldn't let anyone see him cry... not even when they buried Mommy... but... I don't know why it wouldn't be allowed... is it bad?

Oki sat down beside the child.
"Of course not, imootochan; you can still cry if you want to or need to. But sometimes, when you grow up, you need to be strong for other people so that you can be there to help dry their tears. When you do that, you allow them to cry for you. That's a very grown up question for such a little girl, though."

Turning her head to the brook Kira tried to hide her face by turning away. Although she kept her voice as steady as she could, Kira couldn't help but let the small tears stain her face again.
Daddy doesn't cry... and none of his friends cried when it happened... but I saw his friend's wives cry and Mommy's friends cried too... Daddy gets hurt a lot at work... and I try really hard to fix him but... Mommy use to cry a lot after healing him... does that mean that she was crying for him?
Closing her eyes, Kira wondered if her father ever cried, or if it was just something that girls did. Thinking back she could remember that a couple of her mother's family cried too and they were men... Why did people not cry? I know Daddy cared... but Mommy couldn't cry for him anymore...

"That's right," Oki said gently. "She would cry so he didn't have, and probably because she was worried about him. Sometimes fathers and other men have a harder time crying than other people; they're so used to being strong that they don't want anyone else to have to carry their burden of their grief. But just because they don't cry doesn't mean that they hurt any less, or that they don't care. I'm sure your daddy finds other ways to express his loss."

Looking back at the lady Kira bit her bottom lip before speaking again her voice quivvering.
But... who will cry for Daddy now?
Closing her eyes she tried to hide her tears and turned her head back to the brook, placing a fist near her mouth to muffle the sob that almost broke through

"I think you're crying for him right now, imootochan," Oki said softly.
She wanted to comfort the child, but she wasn't sure how. She could see that she was in pain, and she could empathize, she just wasn't sure what to do.
She raised a hand and lightly rubbed the child's back.

Flinching slightly at the touch Kira bit down on her lip harder before whimpering and moving to lean against Oki. Although it made her cry harder and she couldn't hold back a sob anymore Kira felt strangely comforted, only her mother would hold her when she cried since her father was always working.
Not wanting to impose too much on Oki, Kira held her arms tightly around her legs, wanting to cling on to the comfort but scared that it would be too much for the nice lady.

As the child leaned against her and began to sob, Oki pulled the child gently to her and held her, rocking her softly and making quiet shushing sounds. She knew this, and knew it well.
"I know it hurts, imootochan, but you have to remember the good times with your mother. She misses you just as much as you miss her, and she's watching over you and your daddy, but she wouldn't want you to be sad. She loved you very much, and she still does. That will never, ever go away."

Giving in to the temptation of having someone hold her Kira moved to hold onto Oki while she cried. She knew that what was said was true, but it still hurt... she wasn't ready to live by herself most of the time, and she knew that it would be a long time before she could even look at her mother's "special room" where her pretty candles were again.
Arigato... I just.... I'm scared.... she didn't want me... to go with my friends... but I want to help... maybe if I do really good... then other mommies won't have... to go away too... i want to help... but mommy didn't want me to... and... what if...
Breaking off Kira found her throat closing in with a lump that she could feel right down to her heart. Fighting it off she eventually let go and clingged on to Oki
