Oki groaned, stretching out beneath the large maple in the park. It was the first day that the heat of summer really seemed to be easing up, and she enjoyed the cool kiss of the autumn breeze. She wasn't at the academy today, but she was still surrounded by books. She was still trying to gain a better understanding of how the summoning technique worked, how she would need to channel her chakra to be able to successfully complete it. With the exception of the one time in Thunder Country, she had never managed to perform it.
She let the book fall open on her chest, tilting her head back and listening to the gentle rustle of the reeds growing along side the koi pond. It had been years since she had been here. It was nice to be back.

Having decided to leave once her father left the house, Kira had walked around for the past couple of hours, just thinking. The tears she had cried at first has long since dried the only indication of her having cried being slight discoloration in her eyes. Her normally soft and expressive eyes were dulled, leaving none of their normal glow.
Having not noticed where she had been walking, Kira broke out of her dazed mind slightly as a soft breeze blew past here. The unexpected change made her stop. Hearing a soft rustle Kira walked in the direction of the noise. Her arms lay flat against her sides while she walked and her head was facing the ground, making it next to impossible for her to really watch where she was going.

The park was quiet today, and Oki was glad of it. It was a nice change, being away from a noisy classroom. She had almost forgotten what it was like to have time to herself, away from other people. She'd have to make a point of doing this more, especially before the winter came and it would be too cold to be out like this. She could hear soft footfalls approaching, but she didn't let it trouble her. People had been passing by all day.

Having followed the rustle Kira soon found herself close to the edge of a pond. Without thought she sat down, unknowingly merely a couple feet away from Oki. Bringing her knees up to her chest she watched a few of the remaining dragonflies and other bugs fly and seem to dance in the air.
Kaa-san would have loved this... she loves the dragonflies...
Hiding most of her face in her knees she didn't notice as the thought cause a soft whimper from her throat.
Outo-sama was right... I really am getting foolish... thinking about Kaa-san wont bring her back... I wonder if she would even want to come back anymore...

Hearing the whimper, Oki's eyes opened and she sat up. She knew the voice before she saw the girl, and like all of the other times, the child was upset.
"Kira-chan," she called softly. "What's wrong?"

Yelping slightly at having someone address her, Kira stood and turned quickly to face Oki. Blushing brightly she nearly ended up in the pond but managed to stead herself before she fell in. Trying to smile Kira placed her hands behind her back.
I have to remember that Outo-sama said that hugging was too young for me now..
Oki-senpai! Gomen I didn't realize anyone else was here

"It's alright, love, I was just here studying. Are you alright?"
Oki watched Kira, her head tilted lightly to the side. The book she had been reading had toppled to the ground when she sat up, and she left it there unheeded.

Hai
Answering too quickly, Kira bit her lip, which was easily her worst habit and tried to think of a way not to let Oki think she was weak. Moving closer and kneeling down beside the other girl, Kira looked at the books surrounding the area. Picking up the one that had fallen she closed it and held it out to Oki.
It's nothing all that serious, OKi-senpai... Outo-sama and I had an argument and I needed to walk it off... I guess I didn't realize where I was...

"I'm sorry to hear that," Oki said, taking the book with a nod and setting it on her lap. "Do you need to talk about it?"

Bowing her head slightly, Kira moved so that she was on her knees with the hem of her dress in her hands. Picking at the fabric although not enough to harm the dress she spoke
It's just... Outo-sama doesn't like it when I talk about Kaa-san... he said... that it didn't matter that she liked the blue birds too... or that her favorite butterfly was on the door... 'cause wouldn't see them anymore...

"It sounds like your father misses her very much, imooto-chan, but that he's having a very hard dealing wither her loss," Oki said gently, and carefully. "But I believe that the people we love never really leave us. If ti matters to you that she loved the blue birds, or that you see her favorite butterfly, then it matters very much because it's something that reminds you of her. Maybe it's her way of trying to let you know that she's happy, that she thinks of you often, and that she wants you to find peace and happiness too."

Blinking softly Kira chanced a peek through her bangs at Oki, she knew that the older girl would never lie to her. The last part caught her by surprise though, Doesn't she know... no... probably not, I guess she doesn't... but if she knew would she be mad?
Holding onto the bottom of her dress, Kira brought her eyes up to Oki
But Kaa-san wouldn't have to make me remember, Oki-senpai she already kept her promise... She promised that she would make sure that an angel would always take care of me, she sent you, Oki-senpai... Kaa-san would never break a promise to me..
By the expression on her face and in her eyes it was clear to anyone that this is was solid fact in her mind.

Oki smiled and held her arms out to Kira.
"I'll always do my best to look out for you, imooto-chan. You know you can come to me for anything, right? No matter how silly anyone says it is, I'll do my best for you. But I think your mother does need to remind you. Mother's want their daughters to be happy, and you haven't been very happy at all."

Seeing the offer Kira smiled for the first time since her father spoke to her and quickly crawled to cuddle into Oki's lap. Holding the older girl tight she closed her eyes happily. It always felt wonderful when Oki held her, like she was coming home after being so far away. She knew that she would never be able to replace her mother and that no other hugs would feel the same but they still felt like the same emotions and that helped.
Sometimes I'm happy, Oki-senpai... if I was sad all the time I could forget how to smile... and of course I can trust you with anything, Oki-senpai like I said Kaa-san let me find you... just 'cause you don't have wings doesn't make you any less of an angel...

"I'm no angel yet, imooto-chan, but I'll earn those wings some day," Oki smiled, cuddling Kira close. This was the kind of contract she had craved when she was younger, and being able to give it to another made her feel warm, maternal. She wasn't sure what all she could do for Kira, but she'd try her best to move heaven and earth for her if it would help.
"Would you like to see a trick, Kira?"
