"Sure," Oki smiled at his enthusiasm. "Finish up this one, and I'll read anything that you like for you."

Ryo nodded happily, and with renewed enthusiasm he set himself back to reading the book. He still stumbled over words, but did manage to make it through the book. "I did it!" He threw his arms around oki's neck, hugging her tight.

Oki hugged him back just as tightly with a laugh. "I knew you could! And now that you've read it once, it'll be that much easier for the next time because the worst is over. Now what am I reading to you?"

"Mmm, yup! I'll be able to read it again!" He snuggled into Oki's hug, feeling loathe to let go. "I dunno, what one do you want to read?" He nuzzled in closer.

Oki thought for a moment. "I just got a new book, and it's full of little stories. Maybe I could read one them to you? I'm afraid it doesn't have any pictures in it, though," she warned.

Ryo nodded. "Lets read that one. I like the stories in the books, it's just that the words are hard to read..."

Oki nodded and released Ryo long enough to pull the paperback from her bag. The cover depicted and warped mirror reflecting back masks and a distorted landscape, and bore the title "Smoke and Mirrors: Short Fictions and Illusions." Oki returned her arm to Ryo's shoulder as she opened the book.
“The Price," she read. "Tramps and vagabonds have marks they make on gateposts and trees and doors, letting others of their kind know a little about the people who live at the houses and farms they pass in their travels. I think cats must leave similar signs; how else to explain the cats who turn up at our door through the year, hungry and flea-ridden and abandoned?”

Ryo hated it when she released him, however he practically could have purred happily when she returned her arms around him. He leaned into her again, practically in her lap by this point. Ryo rested his head against her shoulder, sighing happily and letting his eyes follow along with the words she read.

Oki smiled as Ryo cuddled closer, adjusting the book to compensate for his closeness while resting her cheek against the top of his head. She read of the handsome black cat, of his mysterious injuries and the concern of the family who took it upon themselves to nurse the animal back to health in their basement. The story already had a delicious darkness about it that Oki was very much enjoying, almost as much as Ryo's nearness.

Ryo listened eagerly to the story, wrapped up in the engaging tale almost as much as he was being in Oki's arms. There was something comforting about being held like this, it made him feel like he needed it... And so glad that Oki was giving it.

The plot thickened when the author confessed of a spell of bad luck that befell the family while the cat was confined, and culminated when the author one night watched the cat to see where its injuries came from. The cat was protecting the family from the Devil himself, and the story closed with the author's concerned musings about how long the valiant cat could last.

Ryo stared at the book with wide eyes. "That cat will be okay... Right?" He worried his lip between his teeth, glancing back up at Oki who still held the book.

"Of course," Oki tried to reassure him through her own doubts. "I mean, he's taken on the Devil! He must be a very special cat, and I'm sure he'll be fine." Oki closed the book and set it on the desk, giving Ryo a squeeze. "Don't worry, Ryo. It's just a story."

Ryo puffed himself up a bit. "I'm not worried about it, just wondering about the cat! He is a pretty cool cat tho~" He didn't even think when she squeezed him, just moved. He was practically in her lap already to it barely took any motion or effort to slide in the rest of the way, leaning against her comfortably. "Is there another story with the cat?"

"I don't know," Oki said curiously, picking the book back up as Ryo shifted himself onto her lap. She began to flip through pages. "I don't think so, but there are all kinds of other stories in here. Do you want another?"
